Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subunit alpha-6 or GABA-A-R-Alpha6 is encoded by the gene GABRA6. GABAA receptors are members of the Cys-loop family of ligand-gated ion channels. GABA AR alpha 5 is a subunit of the pentameric GABA receptors where GABA is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate brain and mediates neuronal inhibition by binding to the GABA receptor and opening an integral chloride channel. GABA AR-Alpha6 is primarily expressed in brain at the cell junction, synapse, the postsynaptic cell membrane and cytoplasmic vesicle membrane. Diseases associated with GABRA6 include neurotic disorder and several forms of epilepsy.
