Nerve terminal dyes, also known as styryl dyes are fluorescent probes commonly used to study synaptic activity and vesicle dynamics in neurons. When neurons are stimulated, the dyes are taken up into newly formed vesicles during endocytosis, and released during exocytosis, allowing researchers to track the movement of these vesicles and measure the rates of endo- and exocytosis.
Antibodies Inc. offers an extensive line of nerve terminal dyes such as SynaptoGreen™, SynaptoRed™, AM and FM dyes, as well as a variety of kits that provide all of the reagents you need for successful nerve terminal staining!
SynaptoGreen™ and SynaptoRed™ nerve terminal probes (originally called FM® dyes) are membrane dyes used to trace endocytic vesicles. They are a series of fluorescent cationic styryl dyes developed to follow synaptic activity at neuromuscular junctions or synapses. These dyes label synaptic vesicles in neuronal tissues and cultured neurons in an activity-dependent fashion. They can also be used to label endocytic vesicles in other cell types.
