Frataxin

Scientific Background

Frataxin is a highly conserved protein found in mitochondria. Frataxin is found many tissues including heart, spinal cord, liver, pancreas, dermal fibroblasts, peripheral blood lymphocytes and skeletal muscles. Frataxin functions as an iron chaperone involved in iron-sulfur biogenesis and heme biosynthesis and plays a role in iron homeostasis. Mutations in the Frataxin gene can result in Friederich ataxia.
