Product Details
GABA(A)R, Delta
Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subunit delta or Delta GABA-A receptor is encoded by the gene GABRD. GABAA receptors are members of the Cys-loop family of ligand-gated ion channels. GABA AR delta is a subunit of the pentameric GABA receptors where GABA is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate brain and mediates neuronal inhibition by binding to the GABA receptor and opening an integral chloride channel. GABA AR delta is highly expressed in brain at the cell junction, synapse, postsynaptic cell membrane and cytoplasmic vesicle membrane. Mutations in this gene have been associated with susceptibility to generalized epilepsy with febrile seizures.

UniProt Summary: Delta subunit of the heteropentameric ligand-gated chloride channel gated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. GABA-gated chloride channels, also named GABA(A) receptors (GABAAR), consist of five subunits arranged around a central pore and contain GABA active binding site(s) located at the alpha and beta subunit interface(s). When activated by GABA, GABAARs selectively allow the flow of chloride anions across the cell membrane down their electrochemical gradient. GABAARs containing delta/GABRD subunits are predominantly expressed and located in extrasynaptic or perisynaptic positions on hippocampus and cerebellar granule cells, and contribute to the tonic GABAergic inhibition. GABAAR containing alpha-4-beta-3-delta subunits can simultaneously bind GABA and histamine where histamine binds at the interface of two neighboring beta subunits, which may be involved in the regulation of sleep and wakefulness.
