Bardet-Biedl syndrome 5 protein or BBS5 is encoded by the gene BBS5 and is one component of the BBSome, a complex of proteins that regulates the protein composition in cilia. The BBSome complex is thought to function as a coat complex required for sorting of specific membrane proteins to the primary cilia. BBS5 is expressed in many tissues including brain, heart, eye, kidney and testes. Diseases associated with BBS5 include Bardet-Biedl Syndrome 5and Bardet-Biedl Syndrome.
