Chromaffin granule amine transporter (Solute carrier family 18 member 1) (Vesicular amine transporter 1) (VAT1)
Vesicular monamine transporters (VMATs) sequester neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and adrenaline into synaptic vesicles (Erickson et al., 1996). Two VMATs have been identified, VMAT1 and VMAT2. VMAT1 shows a higher affinity for serotonin (Brunk et al., 2006). Antibodies specific for VMATs have been used to monitor expression of the transporter during development and in aging and can be effectively used as a marker for monoamine terminals (Haycock et al., 2003; Witkovsky et al., 2005).
Fusion protein amino acids 43-135 (first lumenal domain) of mouse Slc18a1 (also known as Solute carrier family 18 member 1, Vesicular amine transporter 1, Chromaffin granule amine transporter, VAT1, VMAT1 and Cgat, accession number Q8R090); Rat: 92% identity (86/93 amino acids identical); Human: 65% identity (62/96 amino acids identical); 30% identity with Slc18a2/VMAT2
