Scientific Background

Nitric Oxide Synthase 1 is encoded by the gene NOS1. NOS1 is a member of the NOS family. NOS1 synthesizes nitric oxide from L-arginine, which acts as a biologic mediator in several processes, including neurotransmission, and antimicrobial and antitumoral activities. NOS1 is expressed ubiquitously, with high levels of expression in skeletal muscle. Diseases associated with NOS1 include Achalasia, Familial Esophageal and Pyloric Stenosis, Infantile Hypertrophic, 1.
