We are developing serological and direct detection ELISA-based tests for Blastocystis. Distinguishing the antibody response to specific subtypes may provide insights into pathology.
Blastocystis is a gastrointestinal parasite causing symptoms often associated with irritable bowel syndrome. The prevalence of this organism seems to be rising as more and more veterans of our Middle East wars are being found positive for Blastocystis. Clinical diagnosis of this organism currently depends on microscopic analysis of fecal samples, although PCR tests are available and may be useful in diagnosis. Some of the subtypes of the organism may be uniquely associated with antibody responses in patients and perhaps with pathogenicity, as well, but there is much disagreement in the literature. |
